Cold Brew vs Iced Coffee: What Is the Difference?

Two cold drinks, two very different brewing methods, plus a simple home recipe for choosing the one you actually want.

Cold brew and iced coffee are both served cold, but they are not the same drink. Iced coffee is brewed hot and cooled, usually over ice. Cold brew is made by steeping coffee in cool water for hours. That difference changes the flavor, preparation time, and way you build the final drink.

The difference at a glance

  • Iced coffee uses hot water, takes minutes, and keeps more of the bright aroma of a regular brewed coffee.
  • Cold brew uses cool water, takes many hours, and often tastes rounder, softer, and less sharp.
  • Iced coffee should be brewed stronger so melting ice does not leave it watery.
  • Cold brew may be ready to drink or a concentrate, so check the recipe before adding water or milk.

How to make quick iced coffee

Brew coffee hot using part of your usual water, then replace the missing water with ice. For example, if you normally use 300 grams of water, brew with about 180 grams and put roughly 120 grams of ice in the cup or carafe. The hot coffee melts the ice and chills quickly without becoming as diluted.

How to make simple cold brew

Combine coarse coffee and cool water in a covered container, refrigerate it for about 12 to 18 hours, then strain it well. A 1:8 coffee-to-water ratio makes a stronger brew that you can dilute to taste. For a lighter ready-to-drink version, start closer to 1:12 and adjust the next batch.

Do not judge strength by the name

Cold brew is not automatically stronger or higher in caffeine than iced coffee. The result depends on the dose, ratio, brew time, serving size, and whether a concentrate was diluted. If you are buying it, the label is more useful than the drink name. At home, your recipe determines the strength.

Try this next: Make iced coffee when you want a drink today, then prepare a small cold-brew batch overnight and compare them without milk or syrup first.

Bottom line: Choose iced coffee for speed and a brighter brewed-coffee flavor. Choose cold brew for make-ahead convenience and a rounder cup.
